What you will learn
Typical course content includes:
- The principles of Basic Life Support (BLS)
- The Chain of Survival
- Assessing an emergency situation safely
- Recognising cardiac arrest
- Adult CPR using current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines
- Safe and effective use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Airway management and maintaining an open airway
- Recovery position
- Recognition and management of choking
- Infection prevention and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Teamwork and communication during a resuscitation attempt
- Handover to the emergency services
- Practical CPR and AED scenarios
By the end of the course
Learners will be able to:
- Recognise a patient experiencing cardiac arrest
- Perform high-quality adult CPR in line with current national guidelines
- Use an AED safely and effectively
- Manage an unconscious patient and maintain a clear airway
- Recognise and manage choking emergencies
- Work effectively as part of a resuscitation team

Key Information
The course is delivered over approximately 3–4 hours and combines classroom teaching with realistic practical scenarios.
