Why this matters now

Designed to meet the requirements under Benedict's Law for staff to undergo life-saving allergy awareness training, this course gives school staff the knowledge and confidence to manage allergies and respond to allergic reactions in educational settings.

In the UK, schools have a duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and the Children and Families Act 2014 requires schools to support pupils with medical conditions. Department for Education guidance also expects robust policies for managing allergies and anaphylaxis safely.

The course covers the difference between allergies and intolerances, common and hidden allergens, preventing cross-contamination, and allergy management plans. Learners practise recognising mild, moderate and severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, and giving life-saving treatment with adrenaline auto-injectors such as EpiPen® and Jext®.

It also covers safe storage and checking of medication, what to do after an incident, school trips and clubs, allergy-related bullying, and clear communication with parents and carers.

By the end, staff will have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to reduce risks and act quickly in an emergency, helping your school create a safer environment for every pupil.
